At the heart of Fergedaboudit lies the inspiring story of Rosario Bruno—a journey defined by passion, perseverance, and deep-rooted family traditions. Born in Chicago in 1939, Rosario’s early years were marked by hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. Selling newspapers and shining shoes on LaSalle Street taught him the value of perseverance and ingenuity. His life took a transformative turn when a group of Italian friends invited him to help make wine in a humble Chicago cellar. There, blending old-world Italian techniques with modern innovations, Rosario discovered his lifelong passion for winemaking.

For five years, he immersed himself in the craft—sampling grapes directly from boxcars at Chicago’s famous train yards, negotiating for the perfect varietals, and sharing laughter and camaraderie over early-morning stops at local Italian delis. This period set the stage for his future, even as he built a successful electrical contracting company, Preferred Electric, in 1963. For 35 years, alongside his partner Dennis, he mastered the art of business. But in 1998, the call of winemaking became impossible to ignore.

With unwavering determination, Rosario sold his share in the business and began a quest for the ideal piece of land. In 1999, he acquired 46 acres in northeastern Illinois near historic Galena—a place where rolling hills and rich soil promised the perfect environment for his dream. With his beloved wife Sandra’s gentle encouragement (“whatever you do, make it fun”), Rosario planted his first vines in 2000, transforming barren land into a flourishing vineyard.

Rosario’s personal history is as layered as the wines he creates. Whether known affectionately as Ron or by his given name, his life reflects both his Italian heritage and his unique Chicago roots. From serving in the Army under the name Rosario Bruno to pursuing art in his spare time—designing our logo, labels, and even merchandise—Rosario’s creative spirit shines through every facet of Fergedaboudit. His story is a testament to hard work, lifelong learning, and the love that binds family together. Every vintage, every bottle, carries a piece of his heart and a legacy built on dedication, laughter, and the unbreakable bonds of family.
